An auto transformer is a device where same part of the winding acts as primary and secondary side of the transformer. Auto transformer is often used to step up and step down the voltages. Auto transformer does not provide Electrical isolation between the winding. In an auto transformers primary & secondary are connected magnetically and electrically insulated Step up transformers is one whose secondary voltage is greater than primary voltage. This kind of transformers used to “STEP Up” the voltage applied to it. Step Down transformer is one whose secondary voltage is lower than primary voltage. This kind of transformer used to “STEPDOWN” the voltage applied on it.
